A Modern Makeover for a Period Property

This early 1900s mid-terrace home underwent a full ground floor transformation — including a brand-new rear extension and a complete renovation of the existing downstairs layout.

With a traditional timber floor in the original house and a freshly screeded base in the new extension, the homeowners needed a versatile heating solution that could work across both sub-floor types without adding unnecessary time, cost, or disruption.

Design Freedom Delivered

The homeowners wanted to maximise light and space in their new kitchen-diner. Thanks to the low-profile and insulating properties of the Rapid Response® system, their architect was able to approve design elements that would have otherwise been off the table — including:

A skylight/roof window for natural overhead light
Full-height glass doors for indoor-outdoor living
Kitchen cabinets and worktops running along both walls — made possible by heating only where needed
No radiators cluttering wall space

Without Wunda’s system, the extension would have required a very different — and likely more closed-in — design approach.

Two Surfaces, One Seamless System

To maintain a consistent floor height between the extension and the original house, the newly screeded area was brought up to match the existing timber level — allowing the Rapid Response® boards to be laid continuously across the entire ground floor.

This clever approach eliminated awkward transitions and made the whole space feel like one unified, open-plan environment — warm, efficient, and beautifully finished.

Wunda Rapid Response® boards adhered effortlessly to both the existing floorboards in the main house and the newly screeded base in the extension. This meant there was no need to rip up original flooring or install multiple systems — making for a smoother, quicker, and more efficient installation process.

DIY Installation Made Simple

Taking a hands-on approach, the homeowners installed the Wunda boards and pipe loops themselves — following a detailed pipe layout plan provided as part of the Wunda system.

3 pipe loops were laid in total: two for the kitchen area, one for the living room
Care was taken to avoid running pipes beneath kitchen units or appliances
All loops were connected back to the manifold, ready for the heating engineer to commission

The manifold was neatly tucked away in a wall-mounted cupboard, maintaining the clean, minimal aesthetic of the new space.

Preparing for the Perfect Finish

To accommodate the couple’s chosen wooden floor finish, a temperature-sensing floor probe was installed, and an XPS underlay was floated over the aluminium surface of the Rapid Response® boards. This preserved the system’s fast heat-up performance while creating a stable, smooth base for the flooring above.
